The Annual Campaign for Gender Balance fundraising auction will take place during Spring Conference in Bournemouth on Sunday 14th September (date for your diaries!). The 2007 event was extremely successful, raising over £3000 to help the Campaign support women through all stages of the approval and selection process. Please do come along for a glass of wine and bid for prizes to show your support for the campaign.

New Candidates Approval Process Launched!

An exciting new approvals process has recently been launched by the English Candidates Office which hopes to streamline and improve the way in which potential candidates can get onto the approved list. The new process involves a shorter and more accessible application form, and an assessment day based around a clear set of competencies - if you are interested in applying for approval, now is the time to go for it!

Elizabeth Shenton is fighting hard to win in Crewe and Nantwich on 22nd May, and the Campaign for Gender Balance and Women Liberal Democrats are giving her as much support as possible. On Saturday 10th May, CGB and WLD supporters turned up at the HQ in Crewe for an 'action day', assisting with the efforts to make Elizabeth the tenth female Lib Dem MP! Many thanks to everyone who attended the day.

I was delighted when the Campaign for Gender Balance asked me to help judge the first Gender Balance Blog Awards - and relieved, because the dearth of women blogging about politics has had an uncivilising effect on the internet. Too many established bloggers, unconsciously or otherwise, consider the web a perfectly egalitarian place where women suffer no discrimination and should not expect special treatment.

Following the success of the event in 2007, the CGB is pleased to announce that the next Future Women MPs Weekend will be held on 22nd - 24th February 2008. The weekend will include expert women-only training on all aspects of the process of standing for Parliament, enhancing your skills, networking and even receiving style advice tailored specifically for you. Last year's event was extremely successful, and seven of the attendees are now selected PPCs!

Yorkshire and Humberside have been working hard towards achieving gender balance among their candidates, and the results are certainly showing! From the nineteen PPCs selected in the region, nine are women, and the Campaign would like to acknowledge the efforts of both the individual PPCs and the region as a whole for achieving this balance.

Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney Liberal Democrats have selected well-known, local campaigner Amy Kitcher to be their prospective Parliamentary Candidate.Amy, 26, contested the seat in the 2007 Welsh Assembly Elections and secured the largest swing of any political party in Wales; a massive 15.8% from Labour to Liberal Democrat.
